Accommodation is one of the largest expenses when you go on holiday, especially if you want to stay in a good hotel. However, it doesn’t always have to take up such a large chunk of your budget. Here are a few top tips for saving money on your hotel when you go away, whether for a weekend break or a summer holiday.
Use a Comparison Website
A respected comparison website should be your first port of call when you start looking for a hotel. Comparison websites make it easy to filter the results by price, so you can instantly compare all the hotels in your destination and make an informed decision.
However, don’t stop at the comparison sites. After carrying out some initial research, have a search around online for any hotels that stood out to you. You will usually find that rates differ from website to website, so spend a bit of time researching to find a top hotel at the lowest available price.
Haggle for Your Room
Everyone knows that haggling is popular in markets across the world, but what many people forget is that they can also give it a go when paying for a hotel room. This works best in person when you turn up at the hotel enquiring about prices. You will usually be quoted the standard rate, but there is no harm in asking for a reduction or, if that does not work, asking for an upgrade or a free breakfast thrown in. It doesn’t always work, but there is no harm in trying.
Look Out for Discounts
Discounts for hotels do exist – you just have to keep your eyes open. Vouchers are available all over the place, and many hotels launch special offers from time to time, especially in the low season. Some hotels also have loyalty cards that you can take advantage of to enjoy a range of perks.
Look for Weekly Rates
If you are going to be staying for a week or longer in your hotel, look out for weekly rates. Some hotels may provide you with the seventh night free, and if so you should use this when comparing the prices of hotels in the area.
Eat Breakfast Somewhere Else
Breakfast rates in hotels are often very expensive for what you get. If you find that the breakfast commands an extortionate price, find a nearby café instead where you will probably eat just as well for much less (the exception is where the breakfast is included for free, in which case feel free to eat as much as you want).
Remember Travel Expenses
When you are looking at the prices of various hotels, make sure you take your travel expenses into consideration. A hotel may provide cheaper rooms, but if it is a long way from all of the sights of interest, you could end up spending more on travel costs as a result, in which case it could be a better idea to pay more for a hotel in a better location.
Consider a Package Holiday
Even if you are keen to book everything separately, it never hurts to take a look at package deals that include hotels, flights and tours. If you have your heart set on a particular hotel, you may find that it is included in a package deal that actually works out cheaper overall.
Enjoy Your Stay in a Hotel for Less
There are many ways in which you can save money on your hotel when you go on holiday. Always spend some time and effort looking around for a good deal, as well as keeping the above tips in mind, and you could find that you are able to make significant savings on your accommodation next time you go on holiday.
